Hop Talk #40: Ravens & Dragons

For some reason I thought that I wouldn’t have enough points to expand upon this episode for the blog, but the more we talked the more I found. This might be one of the longer companion posts on the website!

Before anything else, be sure to check out the New Holland Brewing website, there’s plenty of information on it about their spaces, their story and their beer. I wasn’t able to dig up anything about the origin of the bourbon barrels besides that they are from Kentucky, according to New Holland’s spin-off website about Dragon’s Milk exclusively.

On the show we mentioned two specific places which I both think are great: the theater Alamo Drafthouse and the bar Forest Hills Station House. Both spots have some great draft lists and food, and Station House specifically has a killer whiskey list (the term I couldn’t remember on the show was “Whiskey Den”). Nothing is cooler than being able to have a whole meal (and booze) while you watch a new movie!

For those of you who aren’t in the know, “Repeal Day,” or when the 21st Amendment to the Constitution was ratified, was on December 5th. That was 85 years ago (as of 2018)!

The show ended up taking a surprising macro turn, and I wanted to share two things in relation to that. First off there’s that Budweiser commercial which jabs at craft beer and craft beer drinkers, which I’ll throw at the bottom of the page. This popped into my head after Carl told me about their collaboration with Jim Beam which was a barrel-aged beer, which I quickly read up on thanks to this VinePair article. Is it still considered barrel-aged if it’s aged on staves? I’m curious to hear what y’all think on this one.

The second thing is the collaboration between Miller High Life and Off Color Brewing to make Eeek, which I enjoyed when the first batch was put out. As far as working with a macro brewery, I would consider this collaboration the right way to do things. I didn’t know it at the time, but Miller was recently bought out by AB InBev too! There’s actually a video for that too so I’ll drop that below as well.

By the way, I recently went to the Juicy Brews Winter Invitational by Hop Culture - you can check out photos I took while attending here! Now I’m off to go work on my Marvel character beer list!

Our favorites this week:

Carl - Dragon’s Milk (base)

Forrest - Dragon’s Milk (base)

See y’all next week!
