Hop Talk #49: Skeleton Keys 2018
The first Skeleton Key episode was back in July of 2018, if you want to give it a listen it’s Episode #21! I can’t believe it’s already been over a year since we started Hop Talk at this point! We’ve definitely come a long way and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for the show and our palates. More spicy beers for Andrew perhaps?
For some semi-current news, here’s a short piece on the website American Craft Beer about Other Half hiring Eric Salazar for their sour program. It seems like things are really starting to come together for their new Rochester location - I’m going to have to take a little road trip up there soon enough! I would be remiss to not talk about Toppling Goliath as well, their recent expansion into NY distribution seems to be just part of their expansion, as they have since announced distribution into Indiana and further into Florida. A TG episode should definitely happen in the future!
So it turns out that caramel and dulce de leche, while similar in some aspects, are definitely two different things. Here’s a little article explaining what each thing is. I guess the reduction from the sweetened milk adds that extra bit of dairy flavor we were picking up on during the show!
As some background info to my little fun fact this episode, Soda Popinski from the classic arcade game Punch Out!! used to be known as Vodka Drunkenski until the series came to the NES. The resemblance between the character and the Angry Chair beer artwork is pretty striking!
While I was unfortunately too busy to go to a lot of the NYC Beer Week happenings around the city, I did attend the Opening Bash like I mentioned on the episode. Here are a couple photos I took during the event! I was wrong when I said there was only one international brewery - both Verdant and Northern Monk were at the expo center!
Our favorites this week:
Carl - Dulce de Leche Skeleton Key
Andrew - Coffee Skeleton Key
Forrest - Coffee Skeleton Key
See y’all next week!
